17 April

Today is Sunday. Nina and I are getting some errands done, including trying to update the blog. The pictures (some of which are really cool) are not uploading smoothly. For people too lazy to read much print, I feel you. I will get pics posted as soon as possible. We have to come to a friend's apartment to upload, because there is no Internet at Nina's place. We did a bit of shopping this morning, I got some awesome pictures of a guy baking bread, another making shashlik (yummy grilled meat on a skewer) and some people at the local market. We have to head out from our friend Nastia's apartment, because we need to coordinate tomorrow's lessons. The school has prepared quite a welcome, I'm told, and I can't wait to see what's in store. We're making borsch (I say "we" but Nina won't let me help!) and then we HAVE to get to the airport tonight to give my passport to someone flying to Dushanbe. The project coordinator is going to meet the plane and pick it up so he can apply directly for my registration extension tomorrow morning. This is serious business here, and Nina is taking it as a sacred trust to get my documents processed. It would've been scads easier to get this done Stateside. There's a lesson for the future.

I am speaking lots of Russia, which is kind of a surprise. Nina is Russian (despite being born here) and some of her closest friends are also Russian. I've met 4 of her students--delightful kids--and we speak English together, but they speak Russian to each other. I'd say the dress here is 60/40 (maybe 70/30) traditional Tajik to Western, especially for women. I have already decided to stock up on some traditional Tajik clothes and shoes for me, Chris and the kids. Must go...Nina has large plans for us.

Ciao!
